Ever wondered why an otherwise thoughtful leader suddenly becomes defensive, goes silent, or struggles to think clearly under pressure?

It may not be a lack of competence.
It may be that the Elephant has taken over from the Rider!'

Our thinking brain can plan, reason, listen and choose. But when the brain senses threat—sometimes even a social threat—the more instinctive, protective part can take the lead!

And this has a powerful implication for leadership:
When someone is triggered, giving them more logic may not give you more listening.

Before trying to change a mind, influence a decision, or offer feedback, ask yourself:
“Is the Elephant feeling safe enough to listen?”

That one pause can change the quality of a conversation 🍀

And perhaps, as leaders, our role isn't always to make the Rider understand.
Sometimes, it is simply to help the Elephant feel safe enough to let the Rider return. 😊

Leaders, I’d love to hear from you.

🍁 When has your Elephant taken over your Rider—perhaps in a difficult meeting, a challenging conversation, or a moment when you felt triggered?

🍀 What did you notice happening… and what helped you find your way back to a more thoughtful response?

Let’s create a space where we can share, learn and become a little more aware of our own Elephants. 😇 ❤️ 🙏
